Using Photoshop 7, we're going to do a very basic tutorial. This requires some basic knowledge, but I'm willing to help with any questions you have!

This is our original image:

Now crop your image. Remember never to center the face. It just looks bad. I came up with this:

It's a little blurry, so sharpen it once. I'm a freak, so I do the following step, although it's not necessary. Zoom in on the image 300%. With the blurry circle sharpen tool of a size 5, click once over each eye, the nostrils, and on the lips. Then drag the brush along the jaw line once. Go to your blur tool (I always keep mine at about 3px). Blur the cheeks and forehead lightly, staying away from any defining lines.

Adjust the levels to lighten the image.

Adjust the curves to lighten the image further and balance the colors. The Bones caps tend to be saturated in red, so I adjusted that here. (Although this cap surprisingly needed little change.)

Merge down the curves layer.

Add this gradient at soft light with an opacity of 80%

Add this texture by zoological as a new layer and set it to hard light at 24%.

Create a new layer from the base and drag it to the top. Set this to soft light.

Use this light texture by kurogane. Keep it at normal, but change the opacity to 32%.

Use this brush from insomniac_icons. I set the opacity to 64% and erased the bit that covered her hair. Image hosted by Photobucket.com to Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Add this border by artistbynight. I clicked twice to make the border more prominent.

Next select the whole image, right click, and choose ‘stroke.’ Stroke it in black, 1 pixel. Then fade that to 50%. This part is entirely optional again. I added it so that the white border would look more fluid with the brushes and less like a border.

Last, add some tiny text on the image somewhere. I firmly believe it's not an icon without text.

And there you have it! That was my first tutorial, so sorry if there was anything wrong. I need you to ask questions and point things out that will help me to make better tutorials in the future. Thank you for staying with me, and... totally irrevelevent, but go see RENT!!!
